EX-PRESS-ION (expression) or, the 'drawing out' of consciousness - (together with 'Mind-Impressions'); is the very opposite PROCESS to that of RE-PRESS-ION, of 'Experiential-Mind-Impressions' -(sanskaras, in Vedanta Philosophy); together with GOD's Very Own Consciousness!
That is, EX-PRESSION is a movement (of 'impressioned consciousness' - (i.e. 'consciousness plus impressions'), in the direction of INSIDE-OUT; ('projection') whereas, RE-PRESSION is a movement, or, 'displacement' in the direction of OUTSIDE-IN ('introjection').
However, in order to 'draw out' the latent consciousness; and to maximise the FREE FUNCTIONING of consciousness, we must, of necessity, work with, and through, the pre-existing, innate structures of the human mind; as 'Consciousness Itself' manifests (works through) the MEDIUM of the human mind.
Therefore, in order to 'free-up'; 'liberate', 'emancipate' our (human) consciousness, we have to work within the parameters set by (pre-existing) LAWS inherent in the very 'make-up' (structure) of the MIND Itself.
This is the essential psycho-therapeutic task: - of 'making the unconscious; conscious.' This WORK involves firstly, the PROCESS, of overcoming the inevitable RESISTANCE - precisely to 'making the unconscioius conscious.'
The resistance in this case, as in ALL cases, is offered by the conscious 'Mind-Ego' in relation to the unconscious 'Mind-Ego.' In ALL cases, it is the the conscious Mind-Ego that instigates REPRESSION.
It is an interesting FACT that

Thanatos Blackness
THANATOPHOBIA would be an appropriate term to describe the dread fear of what some Jungian psychologists refer to as 'THANATOS BLACKNESS'.
'Thanatos Blackness' finds expression in the dread fear (phobia) of the non-colour 'BLACK.'
In this context, 'blackness' refers to the Total Absence of ALL LIGHT; and by extension, All Existence. That is, Total 'Non-Being' - including the Total Annihilation our very own being, most commonly signified by the 'non-reality' of our very own (physical) DEATH.
Here, as in many other places, LIGHT is the most unambiguous; the most 'literal' and perhaps the most PRIMAL of ALL 'literal' metaphors representing our fundamental BEING; as well as Consciousness Itself.
Later in his life, Sigmund Freud posited two main categories of INSTINCT: (1) 'EROS', or the Life-Instinct, and (2) 'THANATOS" or the 'Death-Instinct; (from the GREEK word for DEATH).

On Literal Metaphors
Just about everything in the physical world, IS, or, can be, a 'literal metaphor' - for what lies BEYOND the physical world. That is, ALL literal metaphors point to something beyond themselves. However, I do believe that all such literal metaphors (and indeed ALL metaphors) participate (to a greater or lesser extent) in the very 'thing' which they re-present.
If we take this line of reasoning to it's 'logical conclusion,' we arrive at the proposition that a 'perfect metaphor' would actually BE the very non-physical reality, or 'entity' that it represents!
There is an interesting correlate to this in the field of SADHANA, or 'spiritual practice.' That is, the actual practice, (whatever it happens to be), in fact participates in the very GOAL to which it is directed; or, to be more precise, the LIFE-GOAL it is attempting to realise. This means that it is actually possible to experience a partial realisation of the 'end-state' (or life-goal) that one is aiming at, in the midst of one's present existence - however far one may be from the final realisation!
The ultimate GOAL of ALL Spiritual Sadhana (or, 'Spiritual Practice') is known as 'God-Realisation' - or; 'True Self-Realisation' by woman/man.
